Dear Brethren, friends and neighbors,
I bid you shalom and to all who gather with you in the name of
Christ Jesus. This particular Scroll will be dedicated to uncovering
the mystery of faith building in our lives and also understanding
the difference between religious ritual versus practical application.
At the end of this Scroll is a special invitation to all that
might be interested in accompanying Rita and myself on a trip
of a lifetime. Can you guess? Cephas Ministry is going to Israel
in October (God willing) and we would be honored to have some
of you attend with us. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank
all of you who participate with me here at Cephas. Often times,
your letters of inquiry is what keeps me focused on God's Word
and will and without your participation, we could not say we
have fellowship. I appreciate all your letters and calls and
hope that you gain as much as I do out of our mutual interaction.
Because of you we truly do have a God fearing (Church) fellowship
and one that ultimately qualifies us a legitimate gathering in
Christ. Know that though I cannot be with you all in the physical
sense, I am with you in Spirit and prayer and together we glorify
our Lord in expressing our deep love and gratitude for one another.
Grace, peace and mercy be with you always, AMEN
Why did God not rebuke Elihu?
Unlike Job's three friends who were wise men from the
East, Elihu was from the land of Aram. This area is now in the
bordering lands of Syria and Turkey. This was an area known for
it's prophets; i.e. "Balak sent for Baalam who lived
in Aramâ (Num. 23:17; 24:16). Job's three friends
came from the East, an area known for the propagation of
"wisdom." I sense that God rebuked Job's three friends
from the East because they exhibited a kind of human wisdom which
is not of God but of the flesh. By God's rebuke, they clearly
did not know what they were talking about. Though they were truly
friends of Job. They obviously cared for him a great deal and
wanted to help Job in his affliction. After seeing Job and looking
upon his great disfigurement, verse 2:13 says, "they
were silent, concerned and confused."
Elihu on the other hand comes off speaking more like
a prophet of God and it seems clear that by Elihu's own words,
he was there and present to hear all what Job's friends had to
say and how Job responded to them. It becomes clear that the
three friends relied solely upon their own reasonings and presuppositions
to explain the works of God. Job's three friends missed the basic
truth that affliction is not always a sign of punishment. Though
they spoke of many truths, their truths were out of context and
not applicable to Job's situation. After everyone was finished
delivering their advise, Elihu "kindles his wrath"
against Job because Job justified his own self rather than God.
It also becomes clear that Elihu's wrath was also kindled against
Job's three friends because in all their advice and presupposition,
they had found no answer for Job yet they still condemned him!
Clearly, Job was not comforted by what his three friends had
to offer.
Oftentimes, God will use men to be a go-between God and man.
This is most often the case with the calling of prophets though
they too are men who are formed of clay (Job 33:6). So, in appearance,
Elihu was a man not unlike Job and there appears to be no supernatural
aura or luminescence surrounding him. Elihu expresses in humility
towards Job, "my terror shall not make thee afraid."
As seen in Job 32: 8-10, Elihu expresses only that he was giving
his opinion and not a judgment that would cause terror and make
Job afraid. As is evidenced with other genuine prophets, it appears
that Elihu was a "type of Christ's and that he was simply
called to mediate between God and Job just, as Christ was the
mediator between God and man. Please also note that as is the
case with all of God's true prophets, Elihu clarifies that he
will not deliver flattery for in so doing, God might take him
away (Job 32:21-22).
Elihu appeals to Job, as a true prophet would attempt to appeal
to men saying, Job 34:3-4 "For the ear tries words,
as the mouth tastes meat. Let us choose to us judgment:
let us [so that we may] know among ourselves what is good."
In Job 34:29-33, the words of Elihu express that God's purposes
will be accomplished regardless of what man may think or devise.
Clearly shown in this passage is the irrefutable fact that men
are in no position to choose their own judgment or chastisement
from the Lord but they should rather be willing to gratefully
and humbly receive that which the Lord gives.
It is interesting to note in Job 34:36-37 that Job did what
many of us do. Rather than wait on the Lord for answer to what
troubles us in life, we are often compelled to give quick answer
or remedy, which essentially becomes adversarial to the answer
God would give. This again demonstrates how much we rely upon
our own understanding rather than beseeching God and waiting
for His timely response. There is indeed a lesson to be learned
here for all of us: "Be quick
to hear but slow to [anger or] respond."
In chapter 35, Elihu delivers the heat of his
rebuke and pretty much condemns Job's reasoning for not beseeching
God directly. Remember that Job questioned God yet it was Elihu's
position that Job had no excuse for wondering if God cared or
even if He really existed. This evidently was the root manifestation
of Job's problem: his own righteousness for he was conscious
of no wrongdoing. In chapter 36, Elihu offers Job proper remedy
and scriptural application while in chapter 37, Elihu expresses
the vast enormity of God's sovereignty and finishes with what
all men should carefully regard today. Job 37:23-24 "Touching
the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power,
and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.
Men do therefore fear him: he respects none that are wise
of heart."
Therefore, I don't believe that Elihu was a subject of
God's rebuke because Elihu was speaking rightly the ways of God
in this context. To understand the context, you must go back
again to the beginning of the book and see what context was first
established. The book of Job is long and the context can be easily
missed. The right context is that God allowed for this suffering
to come upon Job not for any disobedience but strictly for the
purification and strengthening of his faith for he was already
seen by God to be a man "righteous in all his ways."
Additionally, as I have pointed out in prior writings to you
regarding the book of Job, Satan is still used by God for this
very purpose and we all should bear that in mind when things
don't go our way. We so often think of Satan's attacks upon us
as certain judgment or punishment but the truth is that the "opposer
is for our adversity that our faith may be tested and in our
trials and tribulations we may be made stronger. When we curse
Satan (and many I know do so) we fail to realize that we are
actually cursing God or His will for in the hour of our suffering
and testing, we are so blind to see that God is right there producing
growth in our lives. We so easily forget the words, "He
will not give us more than we can handle." Therefore,
no one should ever take it upon him/herself to pronounce a railing
judgment against Satan for even Michael the Archangel was not
qualified to pronounce such. Michael essentially requested of
God to rebuke Satan when disputing over the body of Moses and
that is also how it should be with us. We must remember that
Satan does not have a totally free reign and his power to 'sift
us' is limited. This is especially true for those who are of
the right kind of faith and who are being protected by faith's
power for a salvation to be revealed in the last time. I do believe
that Satan can enter in and sift us like wheat via God's permission
or by our own invitation.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard in the churches,
pastors proclaiming their own strength and power to cast out
Satan! Good grief:. Little do they know how far they transgress
and come against God's will and sovereignty? When we transgress
like this, we essentially are giving Satan permission to come
in and wreak his havoc upon us. We must always remember that
we do not command God but He commands us though we may approach
Him respectfully and make humble request. What stone is not polished
without friction and what metal is not purified in its molten
state by heat and what sword does another not sharpen? Does proverbs
not declare that even "brothers are born for adversity?"
Of course it does and that is why we must be careful about the
judgments we make because when we error, we so often lie against
the truth and this thereby offends God and insults His grace.
Yes, it is my boldest assessment that Elihu did do what was expected
of him by God and further, Elihu was representative of how a
true messenger of God should speak and so act. Even in Elihu's
"kindled wrath," it was merciful of him
to wish that Job's suffering would soon end and not take him
to the point of death, (Job 35:35-36) for Job spoke without knowledge
and his words were without wisdom. Apparently, Job was compelled
to give his friends answer to their accusation of sin when perhaps
"no answer" would have been better. Therefore, let
us not be so quick to judge a matter but rather wait on the Lord
to give answer. And when you hear the answer that you think is
from God, the Word will reveal it and confirm it to you. Of this,
I am confident.
Inviting Condemnation upon Oneself
In answering some recent letters, I was taken back to
a time when I had witnessed so much poor example within the mainstream
churches and remembered how I had questioned our Lord of these
troubling contrasts. Given my years of deep search and inquiry,
prayer and application, I can provide you some insight and hopefully
understanding of what outcome might prevail for those who show
little or no respect for what should be a solemn occasion when
we are gathered together in our Lord's name. More recently, I
was questioned about Paul's instruction to Corinth on "eating
and drinking" unworthily (I Cor. 11:27-32).
There is no distinction in this verse between a believer and
non-believer. The key to understanding here is that Paul's instructions
are geared to all whom are assembled in a Christian gathering
and is such that what is expected at a solemn gathering is orderliness
and respect. Paul's instructions are not from a standpoint of
law or ritual but of reverence and respect for all whom are gathered
and also paramount is the unquestionable reverence we should
be exhibiting towards our Lord in such gatherings. Namely, because
the central theme in all such gatherings is that our Lord is
present and accounted for, by the virtue and manifestation of
God's Holy Spirit, He is in our midst and we should respond with
fear, love and respect.
1 Corinthians 11:27-32 "Wherefore whosoever shall
eat [He who eats] this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord,
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that
bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh
unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning
the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among
you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves,
we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are
chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the
world."
Remember that according to Jesus, it is more important to show
oneself an example than it is to make any behavior a case point
of law. In His words, "do not
offend a brother." Applying this simple precept
goes beyond the known and visible church for you will recall
that in Christ's view, "we are the Church of the living
God." What is commonly called churches today, albeit
their poor example, is merely a copy and representation of the
true Church, one that was supposed to have been replaced when
the "veil was torn." At best, these places
(man's churches) are a place to begin one's elementary training
in the contemporary context but quite literally are or rather
should be places of gathering for instruction, fellowship and
worship. If the examples in such are deficient in proper witness,
then what godly witness do others see?
Communion
Regarding the "communion" concept, what are
commonly practiced in churches today is not an effective representation
of the customs and practices held by Jews or early Christians.
Communion as it is practiced today is an evolution of religious
ritual steeped in symbolism largely started by the early Roman
Catholic Church. But before the RCC there was centuries of ritual
law practiced by Jews where symbolism reigned supreme and was
regarded as sufficient for cleansing of self and purification
of sins. The actual eating and drinking together within the true
cultural and biblical context of gatherings was a tradition that
many people practiced and was not confined to cultural or religious
precept. It was common place then as it is today to visit a home
with friends and acquaintances and engage in some manner of fellowship.
While visiting, it is customary for the hostess or host to offer
food and drink. In the context of such gatherings being Christian
centered, Paul was admonishing that when we are gathered together
in a place for the purpose of fellowship in Christ, worship and
instruction, we ought to act proper and not exhibit offensive
behaviors like drunkenness and gluttony for doing such would
mar the proper witness of our Lord. The whole instruction was
aimed at polite, reserved and disciplined behavior. If Paul were
talking about a religious ritual like "communion,"
he would not have needed to exhort for the hungry man to eat
at home before attending a gathering lest he eat more than his
fair share at the gathering. With respect to drink, we are talking
about fermented wine in a realistic context. Well, I don't need
to go into great detail what the effects would be to a man who
drinks a little too much wine at a gathering. Drunkenness and
gluttony are considered offenses to most mature adults today
and so too were they then to civilized people back in the time
of Christ.
The Last Supper
Paul makes the correlation and connection of gathering
together with (in) Christ to eating and drinking together with
what we call the Last Supper. The Last Supper holds a great deal
of significance for us because it was there that Jesus gave the
disciples His last lessons and commands. The main point that
Jesus wanted His disciples to understand was that anytime they
are in the company of others witnessing the love of Christ, there
are expectations of doing so with reverence as though He were
always in their midst. Additionally, we should understand that
we are ambassadors as it were and if we are about doing our Father's
business as Jesus so demonstrated then we should not act and
carry on as though He were not in our company because Jesus declared
He would always be in our midst and abiding in us. Therefore,
we should act and behave as though our bodies belonged to the
Lord and not separate from Him. Remember that we became the new
temples in which God desired to habitate. "Do
this in remembrance of me."
Essentially, everywhere we go, every thought we keep, every deed
we perform and everyone we meet and greet is an unyielding opportunity
to witness Christ Jesus. Meal times were especially intimate
occasions for family and friends and whenever you wanted to invite
someone over for a visit as Jesus was often so invited, two customary
practices were generally performed. One, the washing of feet
and hands upon entering the household and two, dining or supping
with the hosts. This was a common and customary practice of the
time. At the very least, one was expected to be clean when dining
at a friend or neighbors house.
The Importance of Washing One's Feet
Though washing of one's feet in a social context is unheard
of in today's world, it is still customary and polite to wash
one's hands before sitting down to dine. Keep in mind that in
the time of Christ, they're was no linen socks and shoes like
what we wear today. Everyone wore some type of sandal and the
feet got alot of dust upon them walking about all day long. It
was common in the Middle East and for Jews to dine in a reclined
position at the table with pillows to lean upon. This meant that
folks would lie and or sit in various positions of comfort on
the floor gathered around a low-lying table where the food would
be passed around. This is still a practice held today in more
traditional homes of Middle East influence. Now just imagine
for a moment what it would be like if everyone at the table had
dirty feet on the same level that hands would cross over the
table to grab food? Can you see why it would be customary to
wash one's feet before dining? Of course, Roman architecture
provided for tables and chairs in some abodes and so we can only
imagine that there was a mix of the two very different cultures
and influence during the time of Jesus. I am certain that Jesus
had experienced both ways of dining but in the context of the
Last Supper, scripture makes it clear that they were "reclined"
at the table.
Many people miss out on the feet-washing episode at the Last
Supper where Jesus was the one to wash His disciples' feet.
This act was recorded for us in the book of John 13:1-15 Now
before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour
was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father,
having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto
the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into
the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; Jesus
knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands,
and that he was come from God, and went to God; He rises from
supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded
himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began
to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel
wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and
Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered
and said unto him, "What
I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter."
Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus
answered him, "If
I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me."
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only,
but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him,
"He that is washed needeth
not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are
clean, but not all." For he knew
who should betray him; therefore said he, "Ye are not all clean."
So after he had washed their feet, and had taken
his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them,
Know ye what I have done to you?
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If
I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also
ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have
done to you."
Notice that Jesus said He did this for us to serve
as an example. This too is also how we should be toward one another.
When was the last time a disciple of Christ washed your feet
or you another? Most people today would be very embarrassed to
wash another person's feet but I have not only seen it done with
my own eyes, I too have washed a few feet and also have had my
feet washed. Surprised? Try it sometime while giving this instruction
as I have laid it out and see if the event does not become a
very solemn experience. At the very least, it is a very humbling
experience for all parties involved.
Now having established the proper context of eating and drinking
and how it is related to the Last Supper, let's go back to I
Corinthians 11:27-32. Drinking and eating unworthily causes various
offenses to self and others. Drinking and eating too much also
causes one to get sick. When one has drank too much, how much
of that which he or she utters (out of the mouth) defiles such
a person? Remember Jesus also said, "it
is not what goes in the mouth but what comes from the mouth that
defiles a man."
Many persons have been made utter fools by their lack of discipline
and good judgment after drinking too much. When Paul said, "let
a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and
drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily,
eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the
Lord's body," He was literally inferring that
we ought to know our limitations and ourselves and not exceed
what would be considered appropriate moderation. If we lack the
appropriate discipline to control our appetites or any behavior
then we would be better off not eating and drinking because to
eat and drink without regard or respect to others or being mindful
of our own limitations would then result in our eating
and drinking condemnation unto ourselves - quite literally. This
thereby brings offense to the Lord and the Lord's body because
again, we are considered part of the Lord's body; His Spirit
in flesh. So when we eat and drink, share and fellowship, work
or play, we should do so in a manner which is worthy in keeping
good company with the Lord and not giving unnecessary offense
to others or bringing shame upon ourselves.
Paul finishes with, "For if we would judge ourselves,
we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are
chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the
world." Paul is quite literally speaking a message
to all whom the Lord loves, that we should expect to be punished
(chastened) or disciplined for our poor choices (bad judgment)
and irresponsible behavior. If we judged rightly in the first
place then there would be no need for judgment to come by way
of another. Does the Lord not chasten those whom He loves? Of
course He does and that is why it should be expected by all that
a brother who might rebuke or admonish another for an offensive
thing or act or even poor choice of words is doing so in love.
Christian Witness is a Duty and Responsibility
In many cases presented to me, someone else offended
someone by smoking or using vulgar language or drinking/eating
excessively in the context of a Christian gathering. When this
occurs, that person who was offended should go forth and speak
to the person giving offense and ask them politely to respect
the solemn nature of the Christian gathering. It might sound
something like this, "Please refrain from smoking and
do not use vulgar language, especially when children are present."
In many places, smoking outside a Church is usually permitted
and not considered offensive except to some who perhaps do not
smoke. But smoking inside the Church amidst the congregation
would surly be cause for a strong rebuke. The same holds true
for foul or abusive language sometimes heard in Christian gatherings.
Obviously, there still is alot of worldliness evidenced within
the mainstream of Christian practice. When contrasted sharply
with scripture, it proves my case regarding the fundamental and
primary differences between the churches of man and the True
Church of God. In man's churches there is evidence of nothing
but division, strife, pride, arrogance and all manner of ungodly
behavior, lack of discipline and respect. In God's Church there
is an affinity and those who also maintain and practice godly
behavior thereby showing unity with Christ and the witness of
His Spirit. Godly behavior is evident only in those who feel
the "conviction" of God's Holy Spirit and are "moved"
by it. One must respond before witness is visible. Remember that
He sent us (the sheep) among the wolves and I have said on numerous
occasions past, the mission field is the realm of contemporary
Christianity. That, after all is whom God makes us responsible
for in our caring, our attention, our loving devotion, our proper
witness and our righteous judgment. Paul said, "Do
ye not judge among yourselves [within the church]?" But
those who are on the outside (of God's Church) God alone judges.
WITNESS - WITNESS - WITNESS!
So our mission therefore is to be upright stewards of righteousness
and godly behavior to the saved and the unsaved, judging the
Church within but leaving outward judgment to God. Regarding
our brethren and the members of God's Church, in our godly behavior,
we are expected to judge with a righteous judgment, admonishing,
reproving and rebuking in the context of godly love and best
example. Remember that it does no good for one to reprove or
rebuke another unless the one reproving is able to model a proper
witness thereby avoiding hypocrisy. Hypocrisy stains our witness
and is what upset Jesus so much regarding the "leaven
of the Pharisees."
Now to the one who claims ignorance or indifference... well...
if the Word were taught in it's proper context aside from ritualistic
tradition and religious dogma... one would not be so ignorant.
If he/she were to learn just what I've written here, then he/she
would no longer have an excuse for allowing such behavior again.
Jesus set the standard for proper living and until people get
it through their thick heads that JESUS IS THE EXAMPLE no one
is going to get it right. They may say Jesus is Lord but how
many actually believe it and live as though He was Lord in their
lives? I boldly declare with a "red
face" that most of the mainstream clergy today
"don't get it!" So many of them don't understand...
can't understand... or won't understand!
Holy means separate. Holiness means being separate from. God
calls us to be holy. God calls us out of the worldly ways and
into a life of holiness. That is only seen in those who have
made an utter separation from the religious virtue of man and
surrendered unto the will of God who calls us out to become sons
and daughters to Him. If we did this, He promised He would
be our GOD!
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 "Be ye not unequally yoked
together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness
with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath
he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the
temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the
living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk
in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive
you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and
daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
By discernment and faith, I also believe that there
is a spiritual implication and demand upon all who confess Jesus
as Lord. There is a spiritual connection and implication to eating
and drinking in remembrance of the Lord. There is also a spiritual
connection and implication when we humble ourselves and do for
another what we might desire them to do for us like the washing
of feet for example. When what we do, we do with an attitude
of rendering service to another, then that is like washing another
person's feet. If we, who say, "Jesus is Lord,"
do not carry on as though He was our Lord then I believe some
of that discipline and chastisement, which comes from the Lord,
actually manifests itself from the spiritual into the physical.
I believe that many diseases today are the direct result of giving
too much offense to others without proper atonement. I also believe
that the unprecedented divorce rate is a direct result of practicing
a multitude of unworthy behaviors in marriage towards one's spouse.
Unfaithfulness comes in many forms. I believe that poor or illicit
business practices earn one a quick recompense as I also believe
that hardened "law-breakers" of society never get away
with it. Eventually, whatever you do it all catches up with you
and that is the love of God.
He shows Himself to be true, unwavering and justified. He protects
the innocent to a degree and punishes those whom He loves. Anyone who goes too far or
gets carried away gets "taken out." All of these trials,
tribulations, tests and adversity are for our strengthening and
maturing, for sanctification and purification. True, some branches
are pruned and cast into the fire to be burned but we are not
a holy people when we answer His call. We are made holy by His
grace after we are called and choose to remain with Him. A sincere
repentance is only the beginning of the road to sanctification.
That's the TRUTH in a nutshell!
On the Gift of Tongues
Please understand that I am not one who is against the
speaking of tongues but I am one who has a tremendous gift of
discernment and know when devils speak and angels are giving
praise!
I'm glad that some of you are comfortable with speaking in tongues
but know that this is a gift and not a sign that one must have
in order to feel spiritually filled. It is taught in many charismatic
churches that unless you can speak in tongues, you cannot show
yourself to be "Spirit-filled." This just simply is
not true! Scripture bears this out and Paul gave us the most
complete understanding of what tongues were - what they were
for and also how they placed among the other important gifts
that accompany the indwelling Spirit of God. It is important
that you understand and discern the differences evidenced between
tongue usage in today's contemporary churches and how tongues
were used in the first century Church (gathering of disciples
to Christ).
Paul confesses in 1 Corinthians 14:10-13 "There
are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world,
and none of them is without signification. Therefore if
I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him
that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian
unto me. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual
gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray
that he may interpret."
In the above, Paul is exhorting that one who has the gift of
tongues should pray to also be able to interpret so that the
Church may be edified otherwise the gift serves nothing more
than self edification and risks unnecessarily offending the unsaved
or spiritually deprived. 1 Corinthians 14:2 "For
he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men,
but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the
spirit he speaketh mysteries." Paul also clearly
indicates that "Tongues" are indeed a gift but one
recently declared to me that they were not a gift. Furthermore,
Paul also indicates that Tongues are the least of "spiritual
gifts" and exhorts that one should desire more earnestly
to have the gift of prophecy so that the Church may be edified.
1 Corinthians 14:3-4 "But he that prophesieth speaketh
unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He
that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he
that prophesieth edifieth the church."
1 Corinthians 14:5-6 "I would that ye all spake with
tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he
that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren,
if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit
you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by
knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?"
Now this is not to belittle the gift of tongues but should be
a wholesome guide to follow when looking at the various gifts
distributed among the members of a church body. One must ask
what is more prelevant and how are the gifts employed? Of all
the distribution of gifts, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:7-10
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to
every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit
the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge
by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit;
to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To
another the working of miracles; to another prophecy;
to another discerning of spirits; to another divers
kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:"
1 Corinthians 12:27-31 "Now ye are the body of
Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some
in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets,
thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts
of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are
all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all
speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly
the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way."
The above proves my point that tongues are a gift but not the
most valued gift. Now how does this compare with the practice
of gifts common in today's churches? Remember that I do not speak
by way of mere knowledge but wisdom because I have experienced
and tested all these things by what the Word of God establishes
and bears witness of. Remember that I have declared often times
prior many are without discipline? I also indicated to you clearly
that I have discerned the tongues of demons in certain congregations
yet some of you declare that the fallen demons, devils (angels)
do not have a voice. Do not be deceived dear ones for they do
indeed have a voice and are leading a great many people astray
in the "churches of man." Since the time of Noah, the
fallen sons of God (angels) have been corrupting the seed of
man through the human female begetting children of disobedience
(Jesus called them children of the devil). When God the Father
wanted to repent of ever creating the human kind, Noah's righteousness
was cause for Him to have mercy but all else were destroyed.
The world was terribly wicked then as it has become today and
Jesus also indicated that these days (end days) would be like
the days of Noah.
So when I say, "demonic tongues do exist - please be
very careful," I am not speaking of my own accord but
by way of divine utterance. Though I rarely mention it because
I desire not to boast, I will confess to you directly that God
uses me prophetically (gift of prophesy) and as a teacher in
some circles (one who bears fruit in his witness of the indwelling
Spirit). Though I do not consider myself a "healer"
of sorts, I have been used in that capacity on occasion as well
as posses a wonderful gift of discernment but this gift seems
to make most people very uncomfortable around me. One thing is
clear here, I do not posses all the gifts and I don't think any
man does except perhaps the Apostles and Jesus when He was in
human flesh. Paul made it pretty clear that not all are Apostles,
prophets, teachers or miracle workers etc. and I am certainly
no exception to the rule. Any power exhibited is not mine but
God's power in me.
After my spiritual awakening, though at first I was slow to understand
and comprehend, it started becoming clear how God desired to
use me best - as a Scribe and Messenger. Only my past recorded
experiences and written exhortations with warning and rebuke
to churches and individuals will bear this out. I hold no secrets
and hide nothing from others because what is most important here
is the valid WITNESS. My life amounts to nothing apart from continuing
in my God-given vocation to continue writing, reproving, exhorting
and admonishing members of the Church body to abstain from evil
influences, indulgences and all such delusion which befalls those
who practice disobedience to the very pattern and example of
Christ and His Apostles. That is precisely why I make so many
uncomfortable around me. That also happens to be why there is
not a huge demand for me to speak at Christian gatherings. Whatever
the reason, my faith is viewed as a threat to the mainstream
way of doing things.
If we are to accept what Paul established about the receiving
and use of spiritual gifts, you'd think that one with a proven
track record of prophetic utterance and writing would be hotly
sought after right? The truth here is that I am hated by some
and feared by others. Their various fears are because they do
not truly understand and the hatreds are the result of fundamental
denial. In essence, while they confess with their lips, "Jesus
came in the flesh," they deny by their deeds and application
that the Holy Spirit still resides in flesh because so many are
led to practice perverted doctrines and ritualistic fads, which
bear no fruit other than selfish exaltation! Rather than being
submissive towards God, many are arrogant and conceited.
Man Seats Himself in High Places
What is really happening here is that great many men within the
extremely divided Christian sects are seeking for self-glory
rather than glorification of the Church. So, they become pretenders
and some are outright thieves stealing the words of God's true
prophets to boast their own position and status within the religious
institutions they run. My Master will deal with them, each according
to their deed and to some degree, these "hirelings"
are already being dealt with. I'm not too worried about the lack
of attention I may or may not receive. What I am more concerned
about is the propensity of believers to seek after only the signs,
wonders and selfish glories without heeding Christ's example.
It really isn't much different today than it was when Jesus walked
the earth. He healed and fed thousands yet on the day of Pentecost,
there were initially only 120 faithful disciples gathered in
an upper room. The Jews received the greatest miracles and witnessed
a great deal of prophetic fulfillment through Him yet they still
rejected Him and demanded His crucifixion. I tell you truly dear
brethren, it is not any different today than it was then and
furthermore, what is real verses what is not can only be judged
correctly by what witness the Scriptures afford us. You must
let the Word be your only judge regarding these critical issues
and do not allow comparison of various religious behaviors and
man-made precept/doctrine to influence your thinking. Your discernment
is crucial for survival. Keep your eyes fixed completely on Jesus!
Seek to Edify the True Church.. Even when you are hated
for it!
As Paul said it is better to desire for the gift of prophesy
so that all may be edified. The problem with tongues is that
unless one also has the gift of interpretation, how can he/she
understand what is being voiced? I am one that searches deeply
to understand and apply myself and am not content with such a
small gift with little value to the Church as a whole. It might
interest you that I did not specifically desire the gift of prophesy
but it was given unto me and it took me a while to really believe
it. Only after a long season of seeing certain things come to
pass with individuals I spoke to and also churches, did I realize
and was able to confirm that God indeed endowed a very special
gift upon me. You should also understand that once I accepted
that being true, I became very aware of the great responsibility
that accompanies such a gift. This is never something to toy
with or make a living by. A gift like this is only for the edification
of others and I am content with being used in such a way by God.
It grieves me unceasingly however that the churches I was once
a part of rejected me and did not allow me to speak to their
congregations. After a long season of disappointment and grief
I finally realized and accepted that what was happening to me
would not be any different that what the Word of God foretold.
I became aware that the "Word" would fulfill itself
in my life and the lives of others whom I touched if only I remained
obedient and true in my commitment to God.
What was my commitment you might ask? To love the Lord my God
with all my heart, soul and mind and to listen to His Word and
apply myself as a disciple should. That is "who" the
"Word" was left for; the Disciples of Christ. It
(the Word) cannot be understood by anyone else nor be well applied
by those with selfish motive. The Word is an instruction
manual for me and one that I dare not ignore. There is nothing
on earth that I can compare it or myself to except the life and
teachings (pattern) of God's only Son. As I told you many times
before, we are "called out" to become sons and daughters
of the Father doing the Father's will like Jesus was called out
to do His Father's bidding. This commission and commandment from
God goes far beyond any superficial belief or religious practice.
This is truly a way of life and only one that can be achieved
by those who are truly born again by the indwelling Spirit of
God.
Please don't think that I am attempting to belittle the faith
you do have. The desired response to my bold, unwavering and
strong message is to let your faith increase and do not become
limited in your desire for understanding and practical application.
It is in your weakened state that God may do the most amount
of good in you and through you and by that you will be greatly
strengthened. I'll close this with Paul's message on the "seemly
verses the unseemly" members of Christ's Body...
1 Corinthians 12:20-25 "But now are they many members,
yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I
have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have
no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body,
which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members
of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these
we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more
abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but
God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant
honor to that part which lacked: That there should be no
schism in the body; but that the members should have the same
care one for another."
I value your fellowship and careful consideration to the calling
that Christ afforded us. Remember that the "angels
of God are given for those that will inherit eternal salvation."
Just be careful what angels will speak and test all things by
the Word, which was left for our training and instruction and
edification of the true Church in Christ.
Your Invitation to tour Israel with
Cephas!
Cephas Ministry invites you to join us with Southwest
Radio Church Ministries 50th Tour
to Israel. We invite you to join our Tour Leaders, Dr. Noah Hutchings,
Dr. Bob Glaze and us and for an educational tour of a lifetime
to see significant biblical sites referenced in our Holy Bibles.
The trip will be from October 14th thru
October 26th 2006. Tour costs are $3,495.00
based on double occupancy with departing Delta Airlines flight
out of Atlanta, GA. Price includes international flight, Israeli
guide, air-conditioned bus and driver, Hotels, luggage handling,
fuel surcharge taxes, Jordan visa, taxes, sites, trips and two
meals a day.
Day 1 & 2 will be spent getting there. We depart on Delta
Airlines flight #152 at 10:45 p.m. and arrive in Tel Aviv at
5:25 p.m. the next day. After immigration and baggage check,
we will be transported to the Sharon Herzlia Hotel in Tel Aviv
for dinner and an overnighter.
On October 16, after a good night's rest, we will begin our day
with a giant Israeli buffet breakfast. Each day, our group will
begin the journey with prayer, Bible readings and devotions.
With each site, we will study the related Scripture explaining
its spiritual and historical significance. Our first scheduled
stop will be at Caesarea, a large Roman coastal city where the
Apostle Paul was imprisoned for two years (Acts 23:23-26:32).
Then we will migrate north to Haifa where we will visit Mt. Carmel,
the site where Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal (1 Kings
18), Elijah's cave and a Druze village if time permits. Then
we will travel southwest to visit Mt. Megiddo to see the future
site of Armageddon (Rev. 16:16). It will be here where Christ
gathers and crushes the armies of the Antichrist in a final battle
before ushering in His New Kingdom reign. Descending the mountains,
we will drop 650 feet below sea level to the city of Tiberias
located on the Sea of Galilee where we will check in to the Sheraton
Moriah Hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 will be October 17th. After another
healthy breakfast, we get the awesome opportunity to go aboard
a wooden boat similar to the ones used in the time of Christ
and we will sail onto the Sea of Galilee for a time of refreshing!
Afterwards, we will drive to Tabaga, the traditional site where
Jesus fed 5000 with only five loaves of bread and two fish (Matt.
6:19). We will also get to see the "Jesus Boat" museum
and view a boat recovered from the shores of Galilee in 1986.
This vessel has been dated back to the time of Jesus. Our next
stop will be the site of the Mt. Beatitudes where Jesus preached
the "Sermon on the Mount" (Matt. 5:1-7:29). Next, we
will tour the ruins of three cities that Jesus cursed in Scripture,
Capernaum, (where we will have Bible Study and devotion), Chorazin
and Bethsaida (Matt 11:20-25). These three cities in Israel have
never been rebuilt. The highlight of the day will be a baptismal
service in the River Jordan for anyone wanting to be baptized.
Towels and gowns will be made available for a small fee and then
were off to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.
On the morning of October 18th after breakfast,
we will drive north to visit the Kabbalah city of Safed (time
permitting), reported to have been established in 70AD, the same
year that the Romans sacked Jerusalem. Continuing northward to
the Lebanese/Syrian boarder, we will visit the Dan River and
Forest Reserve along with the ancient city of Dan. Here, we will
pass through the same Canaanite gate that Abraham passed through
in his quest to rescue Lot and his family from Amraphel, King
of Syria (Gen. 14:1). We will get to visit Tel Dan and the High
Place where Jereboam set up the golden calf and altar where Israel
sacrificed before the golden idol. Leaving Tel Dan, we will then
travel to Ceasarea Philippi and visit the site where Jesus told
Peter that He would establish His Church upon him (Matt. 16:18).
Then we will proceed to the Golan Heights, the land of Bashan
where the armies of Gog are destined to perish according to Ezekiel
39:18. It is here where we will get to see all the relics of
Israel's miraculous victories from the wars of 1948, 1967 and
1973. Next, we will visit the Gamla bird and animal reserve east
of the Sea of Galilee where 5000 Jews plunged to their deaths
in 66 AD to avoid surrendering to the Romans. It was here, under
the leadership of the Jewish historian Josephus that the Jews
were able to hold off for two years before being overcome. This
is also the place where we will see vultures and biblical animal
life returning to Israel, a major prophetic sign (Isa. 34:15)
that our time is near. Afterwards, we will head back to Tiberias
for dinner and overnight.
On October 19th we head for the Dead Sea
after breakfast and checkout. Along the way, we will get to view
the interesting countryside and our first stop will be at Qumran
to view the cave sites where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.
From there we will continue south to En Gedi Park where we will
get to see some beautiful waterfalls and springs complete with
wildlife like the Ibex and Coney. It was here that David cut
off the bottom of Saul's garment as he slept in a cave (1Sam.
24). Continuing southward to our Dead Sea Hotel, we will stop
at Masada, the last Jewish stronghold that fell to the Romans
in 72AD. Here we will ferry to the top of the mountain where
more than 1000 Jews took their own lives rather than fall into
the hands of the ruthless Romans. We will have dinner and overnight
at the Hyatt Meridient Hotel on the Dead Sea. For anyone who
is interested, we will also have some time to go swimming in
the Dead Sea.
On day 7, October 20th after breakfast
we will drive to Eilat and cross over the Jordan on our way to
the ancient city of Petra where we will check into the Crown
Plaza Petra for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast on the morning of October 21st
we will drive a short distance to the ancient sprawling city
of Petra. This red rock city of Esau is said to be the biggest
ghost town in the world. We will enter by a one-mile cleft in
the rock, the Ciq, with its sides towering 250 feet above the
passage floor. At the entrance to the ancient city we will be
greeted by one of the most photographed architectural sites in
the world, the Treasury Building. This is also the place where
the Indiana Jones Movie, The Last Crusade, was filmed.
We will also be able to see Mt. Seir (Gen. 36:8), whose highest
point is Mt. Hor, the burial place for Aaron, the brother of
Moses (Num. 20:28). After lunch, before returning to Eilat we
will visit Wadi Rumm, where the film, Lawrence of Arabia
was filmed. After our visit to Wadi Rumm, we will travel south
to the boarder crossing at Aqaba and after arriving in Eilat
we will check in to the Crown Plaza Hotel for dinner and overnight.
On day 9, October 22nd after breakfast
we will drive north to Beer Sheva (Josh. 19:1) and the Valley
of Elah (1Sam. 17:2) on our way to Jerusalem. Upon arriving in
Jerusalem, we will check in at the Olive Tree Jerusalem Hotel
for dinner and overnight.
On days 10 thru 12, October 23-25th we
will tour the most important city in the world! Our site seeing
tours will include the Mount of Olives, the Old City, a model
of the Old City, the Temple Mount, the Jewish Quarter, the Upper
Room, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Garden Tomb of Jesus, Golgatha
(Skull Rock), Yod Vashem (Holocaust Museum), the Western Wall,
the Pool of Bethesda, St. Annâs Church, Mt. Zion, Caiaphas'
house, Solomon's quarry, the Via Delarosa and the Damascus Gate.
A visit to Bethlehem is possible and will be decided upon according
to time and political restraints. Each evening we will return
to our Hotel for dinner and overnight. On the evening of October
25th we will have a farewell dinner and
make ready to depart for home on Delta Airlines flight #153 at
11:45p.m. We will arrive back in Atlanta, GA at 7:00a.m. the
morning of October 26, 2006.

A trip like this has the greatest potential to renew your faith,
reflect on the rich biblical history and perhaps draw you even
closer to a deeper understanding of the significance found in
the stories of the Old and New Testaments of our Bibles. Our
tour guides have been doing this for along time and this will
be their Jubilee of Tours. We will be in good "Godfearing"
company and have a wonderful opportunity to fellowship and interact
with one another; testing and sharpening our spiritual swords
of discernment. We want all to know that Rita and I are paying
for the costs of this trip out of our personal incomes and are
not asking anyone to pay our way. Everyone who wishes to go with
us must be as willing to lay aside their own hard-earned monies
to finance themselves and take the trip of a lifetime. Who knows,
perhaps revelation awaits us as we walk the very ground that
Jesus walked and conducted His ministry? This is an educational
tour and one that is designed for serious bible students and
devout Christians (disciples) of Christ. We hope that you will
at least consider prayerfully if it would be God's will for you
to go with us. If your heart is moved to do so then respond faithfully
and start making arrangements immediately as there will likely
be some flight and tour bus restrictions on how many can travel
as a group. In any event, your desire to attend with us will
start with prayer and a phone call to Southwest Radio Church
Ministries.

I THOUGHT I KNEW
I did not know His love before,
the way I know it now.
I could not see my need for Him,
my pride would not allow.
I had it all, without a care,
the "Self-sufficient" lie.
My path was smooth, my sea was still,
not a cloud was in my sky.
I thought I knew His love for me,
I thought I'd seen His grace,
I thought I did not need to grow,
I thought I'd found my place.
But then the way grew rough and dark,
the storm clouds quickly rolled;
The waves began to rock my ship,
my anchor would not hold.
The ship that I had built myself
was made of foolish pride.
It fell apart and left me bare,
with nowhere else to hide.
I had no strength or faith to face
the trials that lay ahead,
And so I simply prayed to Him
and bowed my weary head.
His loving arms enveloped me,
and then He helped me stand.
He said, "You still must face this storm,
but I will hold your hand."
So through the dark and lonely night
He guided me through pain.
I could not see the light of day
or when the storm might wane.
Yet through the aches and endless tears,
my faith began to grow.
I could not see it at the time,
but my light began to glow.
I saw God's love in brand new light,
His grace and mercy, too.
For only when all self was gone
could Jesus'' love shine through.
It was not easy in the storm,
I sometimes wondered, "Why?"
At times I thought, "I can't go on."
I'd hurt, and doubt, and cry.
But Jesus never left my side,
He guided me each day.
Through pain and strife,
through fire and flood,
He helped me all the way.
And now I see as never before
how great His love can be.
How in my weakness He is strong,
how Jesus cares for me!
He worked it all out for my good,
although the way was rough.
He only sent what I could bear,
and then He cried, "Enough!"
He raised His hand and said, "Be still!"
He made the storm clouds cease.
He opened up the gates of joy
and flooded me with peace.
I saw His face now clearer still,
I felt His presence strong,
I found anew His faithfulness,
He never did me wrong.
Now I know more storms will come,
but only for my good,
For pain and tears have helped me grow
as naught else ever could.
I still have so much more to learn
as Jesus works in me;
If in the storm I'll love Him more,
that's where I want to be!
